Jerome Opoku suffers racist abuse during league game in Turkey

Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku faced racist abuse during the Turkish Super Lig match between Istanbul Basaksehir and Besiktas on Sunday.

The alleged abuse followed an incident where Opoku unintentionally elbowed his opponent, Bahtiyar Zaynutdinov, leading to alleged racist chants and comments during and after the game.

“I’ve received a lot of racist comments from this incident that occurred in today’s game, which is not right. This was completely unintentional from me. Sorry brother, I’m wishing you a speedy recovery,”  Opoku posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Despite the fan attacks, Opoku apologized to the Besiktas player, expressing that the incident was entirely unintentional.

Istanbul Basaksehir secured a 1-0 victory with a second-half goal from Jackson Muleka. Opoku’s fellow Ghanaian player, Daniel Amartey, played the full match for Besiktas.

Both players are set to join the Black Stars camp for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros Islands next week.
