Ghana’s Sports Minister affirms Government’s commitment to developing women’s football.



Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, has restated the government’s dedication to promoting the growth of women’s football in Ghana.

This reiteration was made during a meeting with the Women’s Division at the Technical Directorate of the Ghana Football Association.

The purpose of this gathering was to introduce the Women’s Football Strategy (2023-2026) to the minister officially and unveil the logo and mascot for the strategy, named “Asantewaa.”

Representatives from the Ghana Football Association, including Ama Brobey Williams, Head of the Women’s Desk at the Technical Directorate, former Ghana player and Black Princesses assistant coach Anita Owiredu-Mintah, and Samuel Aboabire, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association, were part of the delegation.

Minister Mustapha Ussif underscored the government’s acknowledgment of the necessity to invest in the development of women’s football.

He pointed out the construction of more than 152 Astro Turf pitches throughout the country, which has made sporting facilities accessible to women and girls from grassroots levels to senior high schools.

He also commended the performance of Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the CAF Women’s Champions League, underscoring the support of both the government and the Ghana Football Association for women’s football.

The minister expressed his conviction that, with the right investments and support, Ghana’s women’s team can achieve notable success, including potential participation in the Women’s World Cup.

“The vision is to ensure that every District in Ghana has basic sporting facilities, especially for football,” Minister Mustapha Ussif stated. “We will continue to work to ensure the development of football in all aspects.”
