Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has denied reports of the complete closure of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi and the Accra Sports Stadium.
However, he clarified that the pitch at the Accra Sports Stadium is currently unavailable for regular matches. The facility is undergoing necessary preparations to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars are scheduled to host The Gambia in their first home qualifier later in September 2026, following an away fixture against Ivory Coast. Ampofo Ankrah indicated that the temporary restriction on the Accra pitch is intended to ensure the surface and overall venue are fully ready for the international assignment.
Premier League clubs that ordinarily use the Accra Sports Stadium have been advised to arrange alternative venues in the meantime. Meanwhile, work continues at Baba Yara to keep it operational for domestic fixtures.
The NSA maintains that both national venues remain under active management and are not shut down, with focused efforts directed at meeting the requirements of upcoming high-profile matches.
