    Caleb Yirenkyi etched his name in the history books as his last-gasp goal helped Ghana defeat Panama 1-0 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L opener on Wednesday at BMO Field.

    Coach Carlos Queiroz gave Marvin Senaya, Caleb Yirenkyi, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku, and Ernest Nuamah  their debuts in the World Cup appearance.
    The first half produced no goals between the two teams, but the Panama team created loads of chances, which was curtailed by Ati-Zigi, who eventually gave way for Benjaimen Asare in the second half following an injury.

    The introduction of Brandon Asante and Fatawu Issahaku for Ernest Nuamah and Sulemana Kamaladeen brought an attacking intensity into the game.
    The Black Stars tried on several occasions for the breakthrough, but the shining moment came right at the death of the game.

    England-based Brandon Asante bravely teed up Caleb Yirenkyi, who fired low past Panama goalkeeper Luis Mejía to score on his World Cup debut and give Ghana the lead.
