Jessica Appiah Asamoah etched her name into Ghana’s women’s football history after calmly converting the decisive penalty that sent the Black Maidens to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026.

The young forward stepped up for the final spot kick in a dramatic shootout against Senegal at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 11, 2026, helping Ghana secure a 7-6 penalty victory after the match ended 1-1 on the day and 2-2 on aggregate.

The final-round second-leg encounter produced another tense battle between the two sides, following their 1-1 draw in the first leg in Dakar.

Senegal started the game brightly and took the lead in the 10th minute through a well-executed free-kick, putting Ghana under pressure to respond.

The setback only pushed the Black Maidens forward as they searched desperately for an equaliser. Ghana dominated possession, pushed numbers forward and created several attacking situations as they chased a way back into the game.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 44th minute when captain Seidatu Wahab finished off a well-worked move to bring Ghana level before the break.

The Black Maidens continued to push after restoring parity and came close to taking the lead before halftime, but they were unable to convert their opportunities.

After the restart, Ghana returned with the same intensity, taking control of the game and creating several chances as they searched for the winning goal. As the match approached its closing stages, the pressure increased, with the Black Maidens coming close on multiple occasions.
Some efforts went narrowly wide, while others struck the woodwork, leaving the home side frustrated in front of goal despite their attacking dominance.

Although Ghana created the better chances and looked the more threatening side, Senegal remained dangerous on the break. The visitors had a few precious opportunities that threatened to punish Ghana, but they also failed to find the decisive finish.

With neither side able to break the deadlock after 90 minutes, the tie ended 1-1, sending the qualification battle into a dramatic penalty shootout.

Ghana held their nerve from the spot to win 7-6 on penalties and secure their return to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

Senegal missed two penalties during the shootout, with one effort going wide of the post and another hitting the crossbar, while Ghana also had one kick saved.

The final responsibility fell on Jessica Appiah Asamoah, who stepped up and calmly converted the winning penalty to send the Accra Sports Stadium into celebration and seal Ghana’s qualification to Morocco.

The qualification marks a significant comeback for the Black Maidens, who missed two editions of the competition after a CAF sanction in 2022 that ruled them out of the U17 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and consequently the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualification pathway.

The Black Maidens will now compete at the 10th edition of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled for October 17 to November 7, 2026, in Morocco.

Ghana has been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Canada and Norway.

The Black Maidens, who first appeared at the global tournament in 2008, will be making their fifth FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup appearance. Their best-ever performance came in 2012 in Azerbaijan, where Ghana won a historic bronze medal after defeating Germany in the third-place playoff. They will now aim to make another strong impression on the world stage in Morocco.
