Former Ghana striker, Joetext Frimpong suggests Sacking Chris Hughton is not advisable

Former Black Stars striker Joetex Asamoah Frimpong has expressed his opposition to the calls for the removal of Black Stars coach Chris Hughton in the lead-up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The 34th edition of AFCON is scheduled to occur from January 13 to February 11, 2024, with Ghana starting its campaign on January 14 against Cape Verde.

Ghana had a challenging international break in October, losing both games to Mexico and the USA and conceding six goals in the process.

These outcomes have triggered demands for the removal of the former English Premier League manager. However, Joetex Frimpong holds a different viewpoint.

Frimpong believes that, with just two months left before the commencement of AFCON, it would not be wise to dismiss Chris Hughton from his coaching position.

“With two months remaining until the start of AFCON, I don’t think it would be wise to part ways with Chris Hughton.”

When you terminate his contract, it implies you’d need to find a new coach who would bring a different approach, and that’s not how things work in football.”

“Let’s grant him the opportunity to lead the team in AFCON; if he doesn’t perform well, we can relieve him of his duties,” he mentioned on Kessben FM.

The Black Stars will return to action in the coming week for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers as they prepare to take on Madagascar on November 17 before traveling to Moroni for a match against Comoros.
