CAF terminates 12-year broadcasting deal with beIN Media Group

CAF terminates 12-year broadcasting deal with beIN Media Group

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suddenly ended its 12-year broadcasting contract with the Qatari media giant, beIN Media Group, citing an alleged breach of the contract and outstanding payments of approximately $80 million that remain unresolved.

This decision was relayed to beIN by CAF’s legal representatives on Friday, September 1, as reported by the BBC.

The termination of this substantial television deal, initially valued at $415 million and inked in 2017, is expected to result in protracted legal disputes between the two parties and may have extensive implications for African football.

The revenue generated from broadcasting is crucial for the financial well-being of football federations, national teams, and participating clubs.

Although beIN has acknowledged “challenges” in the contractual relationship, the media group plans to take legal action against CAF unless a resolution can be achieved through “transparent discussions conducted in good faith,” according to the BBC.

In a letter sent to CAF, Yousef Al-Obaidly, the CEO of beIN Sports, has asserted their determination to vigorously defend their legal position.

The cancellation has left viewers in 40 regions, including the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, France, and the United States, uncertain about the future broadcast of CAF competitions.

It is noteworthy that the CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup, and the recently established African Football League are scheduled to kick off in the upcoming months.

Moreover, the qualifying rounds for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are set for this month, with the tournament itself scheduled to commence in January.

The final outcome remains uncertain, with questions lingering about whether an agreement can be reached with beIN to continue broadcasting CAF events or if CAF will explore new broadcast partnerships.
