CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced a mouthwatering $2 million prize money for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The CAF boss revealed the decision during a press briefing on Wednesday, describing the move as part of the continental body’s broader strategy to accelerate the development of women’s football and ensure that teams receive greater financial rewards for their achievements.
The move is geared towards enhancing awareness of women’s sport, which, for some years, has been fighting for recognition on the continent.

Defending champions Nigeria, hosts Morocco, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, and Cameroon are expected to battle each other in the upcoming competition, and other top teams are expected to compete for the prestigious title.
The 14th edition, expanded to 16 teams for the first time, will have Rabat and Casablanca as host cities, while the top teams will use this as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Algeria and Senegal will open the competition at 17:00 GMT at Rabat Olympic Stadium, while hosts Morocco and Kenya will battle it out at Moulay El Hassan Stadium on July 26, 2026.
