South Africa stood firm defensively and controlled the game very well and their hard work paid off in the 83rd minute when Thembi Kgatlana put South Africa in front.

Nigeria regrouped to grab an equalizer but it was surely too late for the Super Falcons. This is the first time the Super Falcons have lost their opening game in the Africa Nations Cup.

Nigeria will play Zambia on Wednesday while South Africa will face Equatorial Guinea.
