Ghana’s Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has been ruled out of the crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia.
The Spartak Moscow defender sustained the injury during Ghana’s opening Group C defeat to Côte d’Ivoire, a 2-0 loss in Bouaké last Thursday. Djiku, who captained the side in the absence of other senior players, was forced off in the 71st minute after picking up a knock.
He had been nursing the issue for around three weeks but still answered the national team call, later expressing hope of recovering in time for the home fixture.
Carlos Queiroz will, however, rely on Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku for the game. The pair formed a fantastic partnership in the absence of Djiku and Mo Salisu for the World Cup.
