Host nation Morocco played out a 2-2 draw against Zambia in the opening game of the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Stade Olympique in Rabat on Saturday night.
Zambia’s star woman, Barbra Banda, scored the first goal of the tournament as well as her side’s opener just outside the box, unleashing a powerful low shot into the bottom left corner following a rapid counter-attack initiated by Margaret Belemu.

Moroccans responded in equal fashion for the equalizer through Ibtissam Jraïdi, who made no mistake from the penalty box.
This time around, Banda found teammate Racheal Kundananji, who slotted beyond goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi to restore Zambia’s lead.
With three minutes to end proceedings, the Atlas Lionesses finally leveled things up through Chebbak, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.

In the end, both teams settled for a draw. Morocco will play Congo, while Zambia will play Senegal in the second group A games.
