    WAFCON 2024: Ghana’s Black Queens claim bronze over South Africa

    The Black Queens clinched bronze at the expense of defending champions, South Africa in the WAFCON 2024 tournament in South Africa.



    They beat the Bayana Bayana of South Africa on 4-3 penalties.

    The Ghanaian female side fell to host nation Morocco in the semi-finals but were determined to rewrite the script against South Africa, who beat them in the first group game and had lost to Nigeria in the semi-finals.

    Coach Kim retained Cynthia Konlan in post, Susan Asiedu, Portia Boakye, Josephine Bonsu, Comfort Yeboah in defense, Grace Asantewaa, Jennifer Cudjoe, Stella Nyamekye, Boye-Hlorkah in midfield whiles Alice and Doris Boaduwaa led the attack.

    The Queens enjoyed a great spell in possession, Alice Kusi, Stella Nyamekye, Doris Boaduwaa came close to scoring but all the hard work was undone by poor defending from goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan who failed to deal with a harmless ball from Josephine Bonsu which was pounced on by Nonhlanhla Mthandi for the opener on the stroke of half time.

    After the recess, Doris Boaduwaa and Stella Nyamekye was hounded off for Evelyn Badu and Princela Adubea to inject some pace in attack.

    Boye-Hlorkah’s teasing cross found the head of diminutive player, Alice Kusi who rose highest to nod home the equalizer on the 68th minute.

    There was more to play for as the Queens created several chances through, which Evelyn Badu and Princela Adubea but for some poor finishings they failed to utilize the chances.

    Right on the brink of the full-time mark, Evelyn Badu was played through on goal but her shot cannoned off the cross bar much to her disappointment and the entire Black Queens bench who were eager to celebrate the match winner but it wasn’t to be.

    The Black Queens beat South Africa 4-3 on penalties to clinch bronze.
