Rigobert Song leaves his role as Cameroon’s coach following a disappointing performance at the AFCON.

Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), has confirmed Rigobert Song’s departure as the head coach of the Indomitable Lions.

Song, who took over the role in February 2022, helped Cameroon qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

However, the team’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) did not meet expectations, leading to their elimination in the last 16 by Nigeria.

Despite a notable victory over Brazil in the World Cup group stage, Cameroon failed to advance further. Eto’o cited the team’s failure to meet objectives as the reason for not renewing Song’s contract, saying, “We have not achieved our objectives, and our executive committee and I do not see ourselves renewing the contract (with Song).”

While recognizing Song’s contributions, Eto’o emphasized the need to focus on the future, stating, “Song brought a lot to this team. ”

“Now we have to think about the future.” The federation has begun the search for a new coach as Cameroon prepares for upcoming competitions.
