Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum has diffused any growing suggestions of rivalry with teammate Abu Francis at Cercle Brugge.

Agyekum switched sides from Red Bull Salzburg to Cercle Brugge on loan in July 2024.

He moved too quickly to settle the growing suspicion about a competition with club and national teammate, Francis Abu, whom he expressed appreciation to for helping him settle at the Belgian club.

“I didn’t know he [Abu Francis] was playing there. When everything was done, I went through the club’s profile to see if there was a player I could relate with; that was when I followed up with him,” he explained. “He told me a lot about the club when I arrived. He helped me.”

He added, “When people tend to have their countrymen on the same team, they see it to be a competition, but I didn’t see him as that. I saw him as someone who could help me,” he told Joy Sports.

He endeared himself to the club fans, playing 46 matches across all competitions and contributing five goals, and penning a four-year deal with the club after his loan move.
