    Ghana Premier League: Match Week Six Review

    Kumasi Asante Kotoko got the bragging rights over their fiercest rivals Accra Hearts of Oak when the two clash in the weekend’s top liner. In other matches Medeama, Liberty also recorded vital wins.



    Two of Ghana’s most decorated clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko clashed this weekend at the Accra Sports Stadium. In the weekend’s top liner, the two sides gave fans lots of excitement to cheer about. In 5 minutes, the home side created lots of chances but they failed to make any of them count as they were punished through a Justice Blay header to hand the away side the lead in 10 minutes which they protected to half time. After recess, the Phobia boys pushed and pushed as they were finally rewarded in the 70th minute through Joseph Esso but Kotoko scored late in the game through a Nabby Keita penalty to hand the Red Devils a 2-1 victory over their fiercest rivals at home.

    Berekum Chelsea and Aduana Stars had to settle for a one-one draw. The home side created lots of chances but were unable to make them count bar one from Stephen Amankona. The home side they had themselves to blame as they were pegged up late in the game as Pius Yeboah scored the equalizer in the 87th minute to end the match in a draw.

    WAFA suffered their first defeat of the season and at home when they were stunned by Dansoman based, Liberty Professionals at the Sogakope Red Bull Arena. Both sides familiar foes knew what was at stake going into this match. The away side had lost their before match to Hearts of Oak and knew that only a positive result will be acceptable to the fans and stakeholders. Goals from Kyei-Baffour Elvis and Alhassan Mubarsah were enough for the home side as Agyapong scored a consolation for the home side.

    Samuel Boadu’s Medeama made sure their home venue advantage counted as they edged Obuasi based Ashanti Gold at home to boost their chances of winning the ongoing league. Prince Opoku Agyemang continued his impressive start when he netted the only goal to aid Medeama’s victory. Ashgold will travel back to prepare for their next duel.



    In Accra, Legon Cities were on the winning side of an important clash against Bechem United. The home side, have had so many mixed results and were in dire need of a victory to spur their blushes. Jabila Abdul Karim got the only goal of the match that proved vital for the home side to record their first win of the campaign against traveling Bechem United. This win lifts Legon Cities to the 14th position whiles, Bechem are locked on the sixth position with 10 points.

    Accra Great Olympics proved too strong for Tema based Inter Allies when they came out tops by a goal to nil. The home side were on the back of taking four points in their last two games and needed to build on that momentum, they didn’t disappoint as they beat Inter Allies, who until this match had four points and dropping into the relegation zone. The Wonder club have since been lifted to the 11 spot on the log.

    Anthony Commey’s King Faisal were unable to register their first victory of the season as they drew blank against Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday, the home side are still languishing at the bottom of the table whiles Elmina Sharks will hold on to this point dearly as they build on their point amassed so far. The home side took the lead through Kwame Peprah before Alhaji Mustapha brought them back level to end the match.

    Eleven Wonders prior to this duel with Karela United were one of three clubs battling relegation in the ongoing Ghana Premier League but a two-nil priceless victory was all the home side needed to boost their chances as the leaped out of the relegation to the 13th position leaving their opponents with at 15th with 5 points. This win for the home side might just propel Eleven Wonders to greater things to come.
