I was filled with utmost joy when Tarkwa based club, Medeama SC  were touted as one of the favorites for winning the Ghana Premier League 2020-21 season judging from the fact that, two seasons prior, they came closest to breaking their trophy drought.

They started the season pretty well, winning key matches against Hearts of Oak, AshGold at home, Kotoko away, and others.

At some point in the league, they were swapping positions with Kotoko, record holders of the league, which generated lots of talking points from key followers of the league that this might be the season that actually sways in their favour.

The Mauve and Yellow side brokered a substantial sponsorship deal with Goldfields Ghana which sparked lots of interest for the side.

During the second round transfer window of the campaign, they signed a notable amount of talented lads (Prince Opoku Agyemang, Ahmed Toure, Zakaria Mumuni, Vincent Atinga, and others) to compliment their squad in anticipation of a stronger push for their title ambitions.

It wasn’t until coach Samuel Boadu and his assistant Hamza Obeng resigned from their roles at the club to take up the Hearts of Oak job which raised a lot of eyebrows as to what might have led to their exit because at the time they(Medeama SC), were 2nd placed on the log.

The exits of Samuel Boadu and Hamza Obeng saw the appointment of Yaw Preko and Acheampong for the remainder of the season but their stay at the club brought little improvement to the side as they continually peeled off from the apex of the log.

One would wonder if the duo were incapable of assembling a formidable unit to properly challenge for honors or the time frame they took on the job didn’t help matters, any which way, I’m sure an excuse of a sort is not far from being made.

In the end, a 5th place finish on the log with 54 points conceding as many as 34 goals would be something they won’t be proud of considering their massive financial war chest, talented group of lads who can make the starting berth of any top side in the league

A string of bad results, avoidable losses to Dreams FC, WAFA, and Inter Allies will incur the wrath of fans who are of the view that the club should be rubbing shoulders with the big boys in the league.

Next season, is not far, Ghana Premier League clubs will have ample time to dip into the transfer market to augment their squad when the season kicks off, Medeama SC, need a pragmatic and results-oriented coach to steer their affairs, it’s unfortunate Boadu, Hamza left them in a dire situation but if they want to be considered as a serious league contender they need to get their acts together because the honeymoon phase is over.
