Christian Atsu: Hatayspor official says player still missing, says there was mistaken identity in earlier report

The Club Doctor of Turkish Club Hatayspor has today stated that Christian Atsu is yet to be found, he adds that yesterday’s news stating the player was found was indeed a case of mistaken identity.

News broke that thousands were trapped after a devastating earthquake in Turkey earlier this week. The reports also stated that players of Turkish Club Hatayspor including Ghana Black Stars player Christian Atsu were trapped under the rubble and attempts of rescuing them was ongoing.

Several reports from Turkey stated that Christian Atsu was pulled out from the rubble and was taken to the hospital for further treatment as the player was reported to be injured when pulled out.

However, Hatayspor team doctor Kahveci has revealed today that both the player and team director Taner Savut are yet to be found.

“When we heard the news that “he was taken to Dortyol Hospital”, we especially went and looked, but it was not there. At the moment, we accept that [the sporting director] Taner Savut and Christian Atsu were not found, unfortunate,” he said.

Ghana’s Ambassador to Turkey Francisca Ashietey-Odunton has also stated they are yet to contact the player after reports said he was pulled out of the rubble.

“Yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here informed me that they wanted to confirm if Christian Atsu had been found and rescued, and sent to a medical centre. However, in all the confusion – which is understandable under the circumstances [as you are rescued you are put in an ambulance and sent to the hospital] – they are not sure yet which particular hospital or health facility he has been sent to,” she said.

Meanwhile, fellow Ghana international and close friend of Atsu, Mubarak Wakaso, has also confirmed on Wednesday morning that Atsu is currently unaccounted for.
