CAF confirms Morocco’s withdrawal from ongoing CHAN championship in Algeria

Morocco and  Algeria have some serious  diplomatic tensions between the two countries and this has led to Morocco withdrawing from the CHAN tournament  hosted by Algeria.

In 2021, Algeria  suspended  all direct flights from Morocco as a result of the diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Morocco were denied a direct flight by Algeria to allow their CHAN team participate in the ongoing Chan tournament.

Morocco are the winners of the last two editions of the CHAN tournament and were  scheduled to play their first game against Sudan on Sunday afternoon.

The match did not take place as Morocco have still not been given the permission to fly to Algeria,  prompting a CAF decision.

“The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Organising Committee for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) Algeria 2022 met today in accordance with the Regulations in Algiers,” CAF announced on Monday.

“The Committee decided that Group C will be composed of three teams and the first two teams will qualify for the knockout stages.”

“The Organising Committee has referred the matter of Morocco no show at yesterday’s scheduled fixture against Sudan to the competent judicial body.”

Group C now has only three teams with two going to make it to the next stage of the competition.

Madagascar defeated Ghana 2-1 in the group’s only game so far. Madagascar are in a strong position to qualify, while Ghana must defeat Sudan on Thursday to stand a chance of qualifying.
