In the aftermath of Otto Addo’s sacking as Black Stars head coach, a number of names have emerged as possible replacements for him.
He oversaw twenty-two (22) games, 8 wins, 5 draws, and 9 losses. He conceded a total of 28 goals and scored 35, as five consecutive friendly games losses culminated in his second defeat for the second time running as head coach.
In this piece, we look at some of the possible replacements for Otto Addo.
Kwesi Appiah (Ghana)
When it comes to Ghana football, Kwesi Appiah is a known personality, having served as coach of the team on two previous occasions (2012/2017) and being the first black African coach to lead Ghana to a FIFA World Cup (Brazil 2014).
He currently serves as manager of the Sudan national team, where he successfully led them to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in a group that had Ghana in it.
I have picked up chatter that the appointment of a stop guard coach is imminent, but hopefully it is not rushed and done in a way that reflects the culture and identity of Ghana.
Hervé Renard (France)
Known as the “King of Africa,” Renard is the only coach to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two different countries, Zambia (2012) and the Ivory Coast (2015).
Quite recently, he managed Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup and resigned on March,30,2026 with many linking him to the BlackStars, which he has long expressed interest in.
Walid Regragui (Morocco)
Regragui is a big force to reckon with in the coaching sphere. His tactical acumen saw him lead Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, making them the first African country to do so.
Before taking on the Morocco job, he won the CAF Champions League and the Moroccan Botola Pro with Wydad Casablanca in 2022.
Recent reports credit him with winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) during his record-breaking tenure with the Atlas Lions.
Pitso Mosimane (South Africa)
The South African is one of the most decorated club coaches in the world.
He has won the title three times, Mamelodi Sundowns (2016), and twice consecutively with Al Ahly (2020, 2021).
His impressive feat of five South African Premier Division titles with Mamelodi Sundowns makes him one of the celebrated coaches in the African side.
Tom Saintfiet (Belgium)
The Belgium international has once expressed an undying interest in managing the BlackStars when he used to manage the 2025/2026 Mali qualifiers.
He led Gambia to back-to-back AFCONs (2021 and 2023).
