Black Maidens Thrash Uruguay In U17 World Cup Opener

The Maidens started the first half brightly but striker Mukarama Abdulai was limited to few to no chances as she had very little to fend on in terms of chances. The first half ended goalless.

The second would however be different as 2 mins in a deflected cross found Mukarama in space and she thumped home the header to send Ghana in to the lead. That goal made her the highest goal scorer in the history of the U17 women’s world cup.

The Maidens at this point looked set to see the game out despite there being more time left on the clock. The Mexicans fought back however and were controversially awarded a penalty when strier Nicole Perez seemed to clip herself in the box but the referee deemed it a foul on her and she pulled Mexico back into the game from the spot.

Ghana restored their lead in the 75th minute from substitute Suzzy Teye but failed to once again secure their back line when a seemingly harmless free kick from 35 yards by Perez somehow managed to beat the Maidens keeper.

The game ended 2-2 and went to a shootout. Ghana missed two of their spot kicks from Justice Annan and Oppong with Mexico netting all four.

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), in collaboration with the University of Media, Arts and Communication Students’ Representative Council (UniMAC-SRC) Gender Affairs Office, has successfully organised a Breast Cancer Awareness and Free Breast Screening exercise for students at the UniMAC-IFT campus in Cantonments.

The event, held on Friday, October 30, 2026, formed part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a focus on promoting breast health, encouraging early detection and making screening services accessible to students.

Members and executives of SWAG, comprising sports journalists from across the media landscape, were present to support the initiative. Among the notable personalities in attendance was veteran sports journalist Rosalind Amoh, whose presence added to the gathering of media professionals championing the cause.

Executives of the UniMAC-SRC were also present, demonstrating the students’ leadership support for the initiative and its commitment to promoting the health and well-being of the student community.

A major highlight of the programme was the successful screening of participants, with both students and non-students benefiting from the free exercise. The initiative provided an opportunity for members of the university community and others in attendance to take a proactive step towards understanding and monitoring their breast health.

Beyond the screening exercise, the initiative served as an important reminder that breast cancer awareness should go beyond conversations and campaigns. Regular breast awareness, timely medical attention and early detection remain important in the fight against the disease.

The collaboration between SWAG and the UniMAC-SRC Gender Affairs Office also highlighted the role professional associations and student leadership can play in supporting health education and community-focused initiatives.
