The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from 24 to 28 teams.
This is to enhance participation and providing emerging nations a pathway to elite competition.

Additionally, AFCON will transition from a biennial to a quadrennial format after the 2028 edition, aligning with global schedules and allowing more time for nations to prepare and develop talent.

The exact implementation date for the new format is still under discussion as regulatory adjustments and planning continue.
