The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a humbling defeat to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series in Kumasi.

Coach Otto Addo named a strong starting berth that featured the likes of, Partey, Kudus, Jordan, Fatawu, Ati-Zigi, and others in front of a teeming mass of supporters at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The first half ended with nothing chosen between the two sides as Kudus shot in the 37th minute was the host’s only shot in the drab first half.

The 1-0 defeat is the first time Ghana has lost an opening game in the qualifiers for an AFCON in a long time.

Kudus and Semenyo tried to break the deadlock in the second half but proved futile.

Lawrence Ati-Zigi made his presence count in the post as he was equal to the task for Mabululu’s shot in the 65th minute.

Coach Otto Addo made substitutions later in the game, Joseph Paintsil, and Inaki Williams, but it came too late to influence the game positively.

Substitute, Milson who tried with a shot earlier was on hand to tap into the net after Rayo Vallecano defender, Abdul Mumin made a mess of his clearance to hand the Palancreas Negras the only goal of the game in the 94th minute of the game.

This would be Ghana’s first defeat in over two decades playing in Kumasi.

The team will look to bounce back as they take on Niger in Morocco on Monday.
