Ghana Black Queens secured a narrow win against Algeria in the opening game of the African Womens Cup of Nations 2018.

The game started with Ghana pressing and pushing forward, Samira almost scored in the 9th minute but saw her strike stopped by the Algerian goalie who palmed the ball to give Ghana Black Queens a corner.

Amfobea Gladys scored the first goal for Ghana in the 12th minute.

Algeria later played with more possession of the ball but still found it difficult to break the Ghanaian defence and they settled for long range shots.

Ghana had a chance to score in the 28 minute when Faustina Ampah’s header went off target after connecting with Juliet Acheampong’s cross. Ghana went to into the dressing room at half time with a one goal lead against Algeria.

Both teams squandered a lot of chances in the second half; Ghana had the opportunity to add to their lead in the 69th minute but Algerian goalie, Kahina was equal to the task.

Ghana Black Queens scored a goal through Jane Ayiyiem in the 70th minute but it was ruled offside by the officials.

Grace Asantewaa almost doubled the lead in injury time but narrowly missed the opportunity before the referee ended the game.

Ghana Black Queens will play Mali on Tuesday 20th of November.
