Lothar Matthaus explains he is big on giving back to the community.

German football legend Lothar Matthaus has provided insight into his decision to acquire a stake in Ghana’s top-tier club, Accra Lions, expressing his desire to contribute to the local community and the development of Ghanaian football.

Matthaus, along with Ghanaian football star Frank Acheampong and renowned football agent Oliver Konig, now joins the ownership group of the club, with the reported value of the acquisition being approximately €2 million.

During the unveiling ceremony held at Kempinski Hotel, Matthaus, a former FIFA World Player of the Year and World Cup winner, shared his reasons behind this endeavor.

“Football is my passion, and I want to give back to the community,” he explained. Recognizing his extensive experience, Matthaus expressed his willingness to support and guide the team.

Stating, “We have been involved in football for a long time, so you can always rely on me or any other member of the team.”

Impressed by the professionalism and talent displayed by the Accra Lions players during training, Matthaus expressed his belief in the club’s potential for success.

He praised the team for their recent impressive 3-0 victory over title contenders Aduana Stars, highlighting their resilience after a challenging period.

“I appreciate the mentality they showed in defeating Aduana Stars. That’s the kind of attitude that attracts me to this club,” Matthaus stated.

Under the ownership of Matthaus, Acheampong, and Konig, Accra Lions aim to tap into Ghana’s football potential and become a prominent force in player development.

With Matthaus’s invaluable experience and the collective expertise of the ownership group, Accra Lions are poised to make a significant impact both domestically and internationally.

Currently in their second season in the Ghana Premier League, Accra Lions have showcased impressive football performances and are on track for a mid-table finish with three games remaining.
