The first round of the 2025/26 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League concluded over the weekend with decisive results across both the Southern and Northern Zones, reshaping the title picture and setting up an intense second round of the season.
In the Southern Zone, Army Ladies finished the opening half of the campaign on top with 22 points after nine matches, edging ahead of Jonina Ladies. Jonina, who had led earlier in the season on goal difference despite suffering their first defeat, dropped to second place after being held to a goalless draw by Oak Ladies on Matchday 9. The result saw them slip two points behind Army, ending the first round on 20 points.
Hasaacas Ladies remained firmly in contention, sitting third with 17 points following a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Samartex Ladies, while Epiphany Warriors continued their steady rise with a convincing 3–0 away win over Halifax Queens to close the round in fourth place.
The Northern Zone also delivered major talking points, particularly at the summit. League leaders Ampem Darkoa Ladies suffered a second consecutive defeat, losing 3–2 to Fosu Royal Ladies, marking their second loss of the season. Despite the setback, Ampem Darkoa remain top of the table on 19 points, though their cushion has narrowed significantly.
Fosu Royal Ladies’ victory has brought them within touching distance of the leaders, climbing to 17 points and intensifying the race at the top. Elsewhere, Northern Ladies recorded an emphatic 4–1 win over Ashtown Ladies, while Northern City Ladies edged Dreamz Ladies 3–2 in a closely contested encounter. FC Savannah also impressed with a 3–1 away victory against Kumasi Sports Academy.
With the first round now complete, both zones head into the second half of the season with momentum shifts, tightened point gaps, and renewed pressure on the frontrunners. The Women’s Premier League resumes with all eyes on whether the current leaders can hold their ground or if the chasing pack will continue to close in.
