Cabfix Ladies FC of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association Women’s Division One League have received a timely boost off the pitch, following the donation of 100 boxes of Softcare sanitary pads to the team as part of government’s period free policy.
The donation was made by Dr. Ofosu Ampofo, Senior Political Advisor to the Vice President, and was presented on his behalf by Dr. Miriam Rahinatu Iddrisu, Social Policy Advisor, during Cabfix Ladies’ Matchday 9 fixture against reigning Women’s FA Cup champions, Faith Ladies.
Addressing the team during the presentation, Dr. Miriam R. Iddrisu explained that the gesture aligns with government’s commitment to ensuring that menstruation does not become a barrier to education, sports, or any productive activity. She noted that the period free policy is designed to ensure that no girl drops out of school, training, or work because of challenges associated with her menstrual cycle. According to her, government is determined to reach every girl, whether in rural or urban communities, and ensure access to sanitary pads so that menstruation does not become an excuse or limitation.
She further encouraged the players to continue using their time productively, balancing education and sports with discipline and focus.
Cabfix Ladies FC currently have about 40 players living in camp, many of whom combine football with formal education. Some of the players are in junior high school, while others attend senior high school, making the donation particularly significant in supporting both their academic and sporting development.
Despite being plagued by financial constraints, Cabfix Ladies have recorded notable achievements this season. The team eliminated premiership side Oaks FC with a one nil victory in the Round of 64 of the Women’s FA Cup and later broke another premiership side Jonina Ladies’ clean sheet run by scoring against them, despite suffering a two goals to one defeat in the Round of 32.
The donation follows the official launch of the Free Sanitary Pad for Girls in Schools initiative by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, on April 24, 2025, at the SDA Cluster of Schools Park in Mamprobi, Accra. The programme, themed Improving Menstrual Health and Hygiene for Girls for Quality Education, targets the distribution of free sanitary pads to about two million girls in public basic and second cycle schools nationwide.
At the launch, President Mahama emphasized that no girl in Ghana should miss school because of her menstrual period, reaffirming government’s commitment to providing sanitary pads monthly to reduce absenteeism and promote dignity and confidence among girls.
The support extended to Cabfix Ladies FC highlights government’s broader approach to menstrual health, ensuring that girls and young women are empowered to pursue education, sports, and other aspirations without limitation.
