BREAKING: Ex- Ghana captain CK Akonnor set to replace Ibrahim Tanko as Black Stars deputy Coach

Former Accra Hearts of Oak, Ashantigold, Asante Kotoko head coach Charles Kwablan (CK) Akonnor is set to be appointed assistant coach of the Ghana senior national men soccer team, the Black Stars.

The Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko and team coordinator Stephen Appiah have both been sacked from the technical team who represent Ghana at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Akonnor, who capped 41 times for Ghana, scoring 12 goals as an offensive midfielder, is set to join coach Kwasi Appiah who has been in charge of the four-time African Champions since returning as head coach in 2017.

The appointment of CK Akonnor, if made official, means current assistant coach to Kwasi Appiah, Ibrahim Tanko who doubles as the head coach of Ghana’s U-23 side the Black Meteors, may lose his position in the Black Stars as assistant coach and would have time to fully concentrate on Meteors as they prepare for the CAF U-23 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, which will also serve as qualification to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. CK may also just be an addition to the technical team of the senior national men team.

Akonnor coached Ghana premier league record 24-time champions Asante Kotoko to the group stage of the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup, guided to side to win the 2019 Ghana Football Association Normalization Committee Special Competition, which qualified the Porcupine Warriors to participate in the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League campaign.

Akonnor was shortlisted for vetting to be named coach of the Guinean national football team but missed out narrowly.

With the appointment of CK pending official approval, the Black Stars technical team now will comprise of James Kwasi Appiah (head coach), Charles Kwablan Akonnor (assistant coach), Richard Kingston (goalkeepers’ trainer).
