Augustine Ahinful confident in Chris Hughton’s abilities as the coach of the Black Stars

Augustine Ahinful, a former Ghanaian international, has expressed confidence in Chris Hughton’s abilities as the coach of the Black Stars.

Although Hughton maintained an undefeated record until October, he faced his first setbacks as coach, suffering 2-0 and 4-0 defeats to Mexico and the United States of America respectively in international friendlies.

These losses have heightened pressure on the coach, leading many to call for his removal ahead of even more challenging tasks in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ahinful, who represented Ghana with distinction during his international career, underscored that while there’s room for improvement, Hughton’s extensive experience as both a player and a coach provides him with the insight required to address the current difficulties.

Ahinful advocated for support for Hughton and emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach to achieving positive results for the team.

“There is always room for improvement. So far, it’s not been encouraging,” remarked the retired footballer.

“He’s played the game before, he has coached before, and he knows what to do to remedy the situation. I think we need to back him up, but he has to also back up.”

With the upcoming doubleheader against Madagascar and Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Black Stars and Chris Hughton aim to rejuvenate the team’s performance and instill confidence among fans.
