Antoine Semenyo delivered a standout performance on his first start for Manchester City, registering a goal and an assist as the Premier League champions thrashed Exeter City 10–1 in the FA Cup third round.
The Ghanaian winger was at the heart of City’s attacking display, making an immediate impact in a match that saw Pep Guardiola’s side reach double figures for the first time in nearly 40 years. Semenyo, who was named Man of the Match, underlined why City moved swiftly to secure his signature in January.
City set the tone early, with Max Alleyne opening the scoring in the 12th minute before Rodri doubled the advantage with a powerful strike on 24 minutes. Two first-half own goals from Jake Doyle-Hayes and Jack Fitzwater sent City into the break with a commanding four-goal cushion.
Semenyo’s influence became even more evident after halftime. In the 49th minute, his dangerous cross was turned in by Rico Lewis, before the winger got his own reward moments later. Latching onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Rayan Cherki, Semenyo finished calmly in the 54th minute to score his first goal in a City shirt.
Further goals from Tijjani Reijnders (71’), Nico O’Reilly (79’) and Ryan McAidoo (86’) extended City’s dominance, while Exeter’s George Birch netted a fine consolation goal late on. Lewis added his second of the afternoon in stoppage time to complete the scoring in an unforgettable outing.
Semenyo was withdrawn in the 63rd minute to a warm reception after a performance that highlighted his pace, directness and end product. He started in an exciting front three alongside Erling Haaland and Academy winger Ryan McAidoo, and wasted no time justifying his inclusion.
The emphatic victory sends Manchester City into the FA Cup fourth-round for the 15th consecutive season, with the draw scheduled for Monday, January 12, at Anfield ahead of the Liverpool v Barnsley tie.
For Semenyo, it was a statement afternoon; one that announced his arrival in City colours in emphatic fashion and set the tone for what could be a hugely influential spell at the Etihad.
