When David De Gea arrived in Manchester as a young lad from Atletico Madrid almost a decade ago, very little people breathed him a lifeline of survival considering he wasn’t physically imposing, couldn’t command his backline and language was a problem in a new country.

Fast forward to almost a decade, Sir Alex Ferguson will sit in his Director’s box and afford a smile knowing he signed a very good player for the club at the time. The Spanish lad has gone on to make an enviable 300 appearances with the Red Devils, beating club legend Peter Schmeichel to that feat, I look at the other clubs and I’m like if De Gea had been there, he would have been tossed out of the ship long ago, Lukas Karius arrived at Liverpool with bundles of expectation but he was tossed out even before one could say jack in the last window, Kepa Arrizabalaga has also been linked with a move away to Valencia, because he can’t make the grade at  Chelsea.

I hear people say, De Gea needs to be let go, they compare him to Allison Becker and Ederson Morales of Liverpool and Manchester City respectively and how they have effortlessly carried their respective clubs shoulder high but I say De Gea did it for four (4) straight years when Man Utd’s defense was out of sorts. I look at the respective backlines assembled by these units and I’m tempted to believe that, De Gea is being attacked for no potent reason, Liverpool have a world-class backline proven and tested (Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson) a Champions winning side and recently crowned English Premier League Champions.

At 29-years the Spaniard should be at the peak of his career but considering the shift he has putting in over the last few years it’s understandable he has worked his socks for a team that has been in transition for so many years under different managers since the retirement of SAF.

A quick peek at the stats below shows that DeGea is never a goalkeeper in decline but needs support to get his aura of invincibility that made him one of the top goalkeepers some seasons past.

David de Gea – do the statistics support the negative views? (Premier League only)

Season           Games           Saves Save %           Conceded    Conceded per game

2011-12           29        102      77.9     29        1.00     13

2012-13           28        84        76.4     26        0.93     11

2013-14           37        99        69.3     43        1.16     12

2014-15           37        93        71.9     36        0.97     10

2015-16           34        83        71.1     33        0.97     15

2016-17           35        74        71.8     29        0.83     14

2017-18           37        115      80.3     28        0.76     18

2018-19           38        122      69.0     54        1.42     7

2019-20           36        91        72.2     35        0.97     12

There are numerous questions being asked about David De Gea, as to whether, the fat contract, he recently signed has made him comfortable, that he lacks strong competition from Romero or there’s more to it than meets the eye.?.

Whatever be the case, Dean Henderson is a budding talent still cutting his career into a perfect storyline. He needs a season or two to rival DeGea or even stake a claim for the number one spot at a big side of Manchester United’s caliber.

In the end, DeGea needs support than condemnation, he is only human after all.

David Silva; A star bows out https://www.saharafootball.net/david-silva-star-bows/ https://www.saharafootball.net/david-silva-star-bows/#comments Sun, 26 Jul 2020 08:24:37 +0000 http://www.saharafootball.net/?p=26537 David Silva; A star bows out

David Silva, the star of an era signs off in a rather unusual season in the Premier League on Sunday against Norwich City with a simple message: I hope you enjoyed the show.

The Spanish playmaker arrived in England on the back of winning the World Cup with his native, Spain, blessed with many talents.

It’s no surprise that, since his arrival at the club, a decade ago, he has mesmerized many with his dazzling football, clever assists and once in blue thunderbolt goals which helped mold Manchester City into a powerhouse in English football under Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pelligrini at the time.

Silva is one of very few decorated players with many laurels to his credit, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five EFL Cups with the Citizens.

His achievements with Spain is one that cannot be swept under the carpet, winning the World Cup and two European Championships with his country.

Silva said: “I arrived here having just won the World Cup. It was a change in country, league, language, and everything was quite tough, but my team-mates welcomed me and really looked after me and after a few months I settled in.

“I have always tried to do my absolute best, to always behave well and I have tried to work very hard too. I hope that people have enjoyed my football for all of these years.”

The diminutive talent has certainly paid off every dime of his £26 million transfer fee the club dished out to sign him, it’s amazing how opponents on the other side sing his praise anytime he takes to the field.

“When I look back at everything I have achieved I could never have imagined it, even in my wildest dreams,” Silva said.

City boss Pep Guardiola described Silva as an “extraordinary” performer.

Silva has scored 60 goals in 308 Premier League appearances for City.

Football has resumed in Europe’s top leagues bar France, who failed to resume after former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe cut the league into halves with its postponement much to the disappointment of many soccer-loving fans in the country and beyond.

Away from that, the Spanish La Liga resumed with lots of excitement surrounding it, considering the top sides Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid battling it out for supremacy.

But one gem that continues to impress since making his debut with La Liga outfit Real Valladolid is Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu having played 29 games and notching a goal to his credit.

The 21-year-old centre-back has swayed lots of interest from clubs in Europe, in England, ManUtd, Westham, Southampton, Everton are all set to be swooping for him whiles Stade Rennes have also expressed their undying interest in him.

He has a £10.8million release clause which makes him attractive to these clubs, who are keen to bolster their defence ahead of the new season in August.

Hopefully this young budding talent secures a move to one of these clubs to continue his football development.

Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew has inked his name deeply in the history books becoming Ghana’s highest scorer in the English Premier League after pipping former Leeds forward Tony Yeboah.

This weekend the 28-year old found the back of the net in 2-0 victory against Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth, who are struggling to find consistency in the resumed English Premier League.

The goal marked his ninth of the campaign for the eagles helping him pip Tony Yeboah, who scored 24 goals during his three years stint with Leeds.

Jordan Ayew has come under a huge flack for his inconsistencies in the past but seems to have shaken the earlier pressure.

Top five Ghanaian scorers in the EPL  history:

  1. Jordan Ayew – 25 goals
  2. Anthony Yeboah– 24 goals
  3. Andre Ayew – 21 goals

Manchester United seal Dembele deal https://www.saharafootball.net/manchester-united-seal-dembele-deal/ https://www.saharafootball.net/manchester-united-seal-dembele-deal/#comments Sun, 17 May 2020 09:23:58 +0000 http://www.saharafootball.net/?p=25943 Manchester United seal Dembele deal

Manchester United have agreed in principle to sign Olympique Lyonnais striker Moussa Dembele, according to reports. Since the inevitable departure of Lukaku, the club have tried endlessly to replace him and with the turn of events, it looks like they have their man in the French prolific striker.

Manchester United will dish out a whopping £61.8million (€70m) for Dembele, who has scored 42 goals in 88 appearances for Lyon since joining from `Celtic in 2018.

Todofichajes claim an agreement has been reached between all three parties for the 23-year-old to head to Old Trafford in the next transfer window.

Lyon look set to be forced to cash in on their prize assets because they will miss out on European football next season as a result of the 2019/20 Ligue 1 campaign being curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Jean-Michel Aulas, the club’s president, has admitted he might have no choice but to sell his star players.

“I am going to do everything to keep the players, but players who are programmed to play in Europe could want to go elsewhere because we don’t have European football,” he said.

The departure of Lukaku to Inter saw the signing of Odion Ighalo to the squad on loan from Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua.

This signing may prove decisive for United, who have not had an out and out striker since Lukaku’s departure rendering Martial, Rashford, Greenwood on lots of pressure to score more goals.

Per reports making headway, Manchester United may have beaten Chelsea, Arsenal, PSG and Real Madrid to the signing of one Europe’s brightest goal scoring predators.

Over two months edging to three the whole world is still trying to come to terms with how to find a way to mitigate the deadly coronavirus which has decimated lives and brought the world to its knees.

Most economies, businesses, and sporting disciplines have been severely affected by this humanly created virus.

This led to a major break in major activities around the world in order to find ways to mitigate the situation.

Several people have called for a resumption in some of the activities that were halted as a result of this deadly global pandemic.

In Germany conclusions have been reached for a resumption in the German Bundesliga, this has given some faithful in England some hope to restart the league.

This however has not sung well with, England and Tottenham defender Danny Rose who has bitterly criticized the Premier League’s plans to restart the season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Club officials met on Monday to continue talks on “Project Restart”, with the English top-flight aiming to resume fixtures on 12 June.

As of 11 May, 32,065 people had died in the UK with coronavirus.

“Football shouldn’t even be spoken about until the numbers have dropped massively,” said Rose, 29.

“People’s lives are at risk.”

Other footballers have also voiced out their opinion regarding the possible start of the

In other developments on Tuesday, the BBC learned the Professional Footballers’ Association has heard from a number of players who have “real concerns” about restarting the season, while London mayor Sadiq Khan has said it is “too early” to discuss restarting sport in the capital.

Rose, who is on loan at Newcastle United from Spurs this season, responded to the news on social media, using expletives and saying he did not care about the nation’s morale.

‘Some players have real concerns’

Players’ safety has to be secure before return – Sterling

On Saturday, a third Brighton player tested positive for coronavirus.

Responding to news, Norwich City’s 22-year-old English midfielder Todd Cantwell posted on social media: “We are just people too.”

Manchester City and Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has previously said players are “scared” about the prospect of returning to action amid the pandemic.

His City team-mate Raheem Sterling shared his concern on his YouTube channel on Monday.

The England forward, 25, said: “The moment we do go back it just needs to be a moment where it’s not just for footballing reasons; it’s safe for not just us footballers but the whole medical staff, referees.

“I feel like once that side of the people’s safety and the players’ safety is secured, and their wellbeing is looked after, then that’s the right time to go back in.

“Until then, I’m. – how can I say – not scared, but reserved and thinking what the worst outcome could be.

“I’ve had friends whose grandmas passed away. I’ve had family members as well that have passed away. You’ve got to be wise and take care of yourself and those around you.”

Mayor of London said it is “too early to discuss resuming the Premier League and top-flight sport in the capital”.

“Sadiq is also concerned about the welfare of players competing in all professional sports, not just football. There are huge questions to be asked how players could train safely, how they would travel to matches, and how they could play competitive matches without the risk of spreading infection.”

English Premier League to return as other top Leagues undecided https://www.saharafootball.net/english-premier-league-return-top-leagues-undecided/ https://www.saharafootball.net/english-premier-league-return-top-leagues-undecided/#comments Sat, 18 Apr 2020 12:59:41 +0000 http://www.saharafootball.net/?p=25654 English Premier League to return as other top Leagues undecided

The English Premier League has agreed in finishing the season in a 40-day window in many other issues that were discussed by clubs present at the meeting on Friday.

Top-flight clubs remain committed to playing all 92 remaining fixtures this season but did not discuss a deadline by which action must resume.

The Premier League said it “remains our objective” to complete matches but currently “all dates are tentative”.

The league has been suspended since 13 March because of coronavirus.

In a statement, the Premier League said “in common with other businesses and industries” clubs were “working through complex planning scenarios”.

“Today’s shareholders’ meeting provided an opportunity to discuss possible scheduling models,” it added.

“It remains our objective to complete the 2019-20 season but at this stage, all dates are tentative while the impact of COVID-19 develops.”

Other top leagues are yet to reach conclusion on the next line of action.

Germany’s Bundesliga: Clubs have returned to training but the season is still suspended until 30 April.

Spain’s La Liga: There will be no training until emergency measures in place are lifted and La Liga president Javier Tebas says resuming play on 28 May is a best-case scenario.

France’s Ligue 1: French football authorities are considering restarting Ligue 1 on 3 or 17 June, with the latter date the more likely, according to sports daily L’Equipe.

Italy’s Serie A: The Italian Football Federation (IFF) hopes to begin testing players for the virus at the start of May, in preparation for the season to resume.

In a related development, UEFA will meet next week to further discuss plans which include potentially using the Champions League final to end the 2019-20 season on 29 August.
