Senegal beat Morocco in the finals by a lone goal, but it was marred by an earlier incident where Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty, which saw Senegalese players briefly leave the pitch and return later to continue the game.
After the game, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation lodged an official protest, which CAF later confirmed was admissible and subsequently upheld after a detailed review.
In its ruling, CAF stated that Senegal, “through the conduct of its team,” breached Article 82 of the Africa Cup of Nations regulations. The governing body further noted that this violation triggered the application of Article 84.
Based on these provisions, CAF ruled that Senegal forfeited the final, with the result officially recorded as a 3-0 win in favour of Morocco.

Morocco awarded AFCON 2025 Title as CAF sanctions Senegal for final walk-off https://www.saharafootball.net/morocco-awarded-afcon-2025-title-as-caf-sanctions-senegal-for-final-walk-off/ https://www.saharafootball.net/morocco-awarded-afcon-2025-title-as-caf-sanctions-senegal-for-final-walk-off/#respond Wed, 18 Mar 2026 00:05:42 +0000 https://www.saharafootball.net/?p=45873 Morocco national football team have been officially declared winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after the Confederation of African Football overturned the result of their final defeat to Senegal national football team following a controversial incident during the match.

Senegal had initially been crowned champions after edging Morocco 1-0 in the final played on January 18. The match, however, was overshadowed by a dramatic moment late in regulation time when Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty with the score still level.

In protest, Senegalese players briefly left the pitch, halting proceedings for about 17 minutes. After intervention, they returned to continue the match. Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the penalty but saw his effort saved. The game eventually went into extra time, where Pape Gueye scored what appeared to be the winning goal for Senegal.

Following the match, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation lodged an official protest, which CAF later confirmed was admissible and subsequently upheld after a detailed review.

In its ruling, CAF stated that Senegal, “through the conduct of its team,” breached Article 82 of the Africa Cup of Nations regulations. The governing body further noted that this violation triggered the application of Article 84.

According to Article 82, any team that refuses to continue play or leaves the field before the end of regulation time without the referee’s approval is considered to have lost the match and is subject to elimination. Article 84 reinforces this by stipulating that such a team forfeits the match and it is awarded as a 3-0 victory to the opposing side.

Senegal’s football federation was also fined $615,000 for the conduct of players and fans, while Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr received two-match bans for unsporting behaviour toward the referee.

Both semi-finals were played on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, in Tangier and Rabat, respectively.
Saido Mane’s goal with a quarter to finish the game was enough for Senegal to book one of two slots for the AFCON final with a narrow 1–0 victory over Egypt, ending the Pharaohs’ run of extending their seventh  continental title to eight.
In the evening of the same night, Morocco came up against Nigeria for a slot in the finals to face Senegal.
Both teams tarried all night for a breakthrough in 120 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, but there was no goal to separate them in the interval, with the game heading to penalties.
Morocco converted four of their five penalties to Nigeria’s two, which aided them to their first final since 2004 as they lost 2-1 to then host nation, Tunisia.
They will be hoping to lift the trophy on home soil since their last time in 1976.
Egypt and Nigeria will contest the third-place play-off on Saturday, 17 January, at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
The AFCON 2025 final will be played on Sunday, 18 January, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
