Manchester City forward Leroy Sane has claimed that no players can “compete” with Eden Hazard, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for ability.
Despite Sane’s teammates Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne being in excellent form this season, the German does not think that they compare to the world’s best.
Pep Guardiola’s side are currently running away at the top of the Premier League this season, in no small part due to the wonderful displays of Sane’s teammates. But despite early calls for De Bruyne to be named Player of the Season – he was the first to assist 10 league goals – Sane thinks the Belgian still has some way to go before he can be considered one of Europe’s footballing elite.
“Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar and Hazard are on a level no one else can currently compete with. The achievements of [Mesut] Ozil and [Edinson] Cavani are incredible, too,” Sane told German outlet Welt.
Hazard has been directly involved in 20 goals in all competitions for the Blues. Aguero, meanwhile, has been involved in 28 – scoring 23 and assisting five.
The Argentine has scored 16 Premier League goals this season and became Manchester City’s all-time record goalscorer with his strike against Napoli in the Champions League in November, surpassing Eric Brook’s tally of 177.
Sane conceded that even he didn’t consider himself to be in the same bracket as Hazard, Messi and Ronaldo.
“No, I’m still far from being on their level. In the whole world, only a few players are,” the 22-year-old said.
“To be able to play with freedom, I mainly need fun. I don’t think and I don’t set specific goals for a game. I just let things happen. If I clear my mind, everything else just happens.”
