Black Maidens Thrash Uruguay In U17 World Cup Opener

The Black Maidens of Ghana thrashed hosts Uruguay

The Black Maidens of Ghana thrashed hosts Uruguay 5-0 in the opening fixture of the U17 women’s world cup.

The result puts Ghana on top of Group A after New Zealand only managed to beat Finland by a lone goal.

Ghana started the match brightly, dominating the hosts from the off set. They took the lead in the 20th minute when 17 year old Fuseina Mumuni made a beautiful turn and shot inside the 18 yard box.

The Maidens were in the driving seat and immediately added a second goal 5 minutes later from  Mukarama Abdulai. The first half ended with Ghana bossing the game but injury to the Uruguayan keeper forced a change and a delay in proceedings.

The second half started in similar fashion as the first with Uruguay struggling to dominate the match. Ghana added a third in the 66th minute from Pokuaa to further deepen Uruguay woes and end the match as a contest.

That however was not the end of the goals flurry as captain Mukarama Abdulai added her second and eventual 3rd for the hattrick to put the gloss on what was a classy performance from the Maidens in their opening match.

Ghana faces Finland next on Friday and look favourites early on in the tournament to go all the way after finishing 3rd last time out.
